Having water meant that we could finally plant the fruit trees I had been nursing at the city house. Gabriel patiently found other chores to do while I contemplated where to place them. I decided that the orange trees should be behind the wildflower bed and I arranged them in a row, spacing them evenly.
Gabriel started digging while I pulled weeds in the garden. I had barely gotten started when he called me over, "I'm digging glass," he yelled.
For months I have wondered where the first owners had their trash pile but hadn't found evidence of it at all. While there was PLENTY of trash on the property, none of it seemed the right era.
I felt a surge of excitement. Indeed the bottom of the two-foot deep hole was almost all glass shards. That alone piqued my curiosity and I was hopeful it would lead me to some "treasure."
So I stopped weeding, got a couple of plastic bags to sit on, a piece of metal screen for sifting and some small digging tools then settled in. The pieces of glass were all colors and when I got a little deeper I started finding bottle necks that led me to believe this glass was older - but still just shards. I daydreamed of the delight of a boy or girl who go to smash the bottles on the pile. Not sure why they chose to put all the glass in one place but there sure was a lot of it. Then I started finding bottles which I gingerly excavated.
Whole bottles! And not so new... I found four of them - so far - a bluish one, a clear faceted one and two whiskey bottles. And I dug enough to get a sense that I was on one edge of something much bigger to come.
